My computer totally freezes up and ‘cracks’ appear across the screen while playing The Sims 2?

I have most of the Sims 2 Expansion packs and have just recently started to play them again. I stopped because after 10-20 minutes playing a family, these ‘cracks’ appear across the screen – literally there are uneven, huge black/purple cracks that flash onto the screen. I hurriedly go to save my game, but a few seconds after the cracks appear, everything totally freezes and I have to reset my entire computer. When I go back in, everything if fine but the cracks appear again within a few minutes. It happens quicker while I’m playing a family, but I’ve managed to build houses etc. without the cracks appearing for near an hour. What can I do to fix this? What’s causing it? It’s really discouraging me from playing the game – please help!
I just got a new stuff pack today (fashion) and the one I’m using to play the game (Pets) is not scratched. I don’t play any other games so I don’t know. I don’t think it’s my game’s problem.
OK because I had an unrelated problem a few months back, where this new computer tech we got to come fix it said I needed a new graphics card. She installed an Asus EN8500GT Silent Magic graphics card. Is this not large enough for the Sims 2? Help please :(

Well I’m not sure about fixing it but it could be two things. Check if your Sims 2 game has no major scratches or cracks. If it does this could be the problem. But if it doesn’t check if there is anything wrong with your computer. Does your computer freeze like this with other games? If it doesn’t and there is nothing wrong with your computer, then maybe you have a messed up game. I’ve heard of it happening to some people who play the regular Sims 2 and The Sims 2 Pets on their gamecube so my guess is its either your computer or your game.

It definitely sounds like your video card can not handle the game.
You could try uninstalling some of the expansion packs.
Lowering the graphic settings on your game.
Updating the driver for your video card
Or buying a new video card.
